A SHERLOCK CAROL
A Sherlock Carol – A play by Mark Shanahan
If you read about us and why I started this business you will know that the theatre is very important to me. Part of what shaped that was our family tradition when I was growing up of going to see A Christmas Carol. So when I heard about this new Off-Broadway show, A Sherlock Carol, that combined Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens I had to know more. I reached out to the author and director of the play, Mark Shanahan. He was kind enough to give our readers some additional information about the play.
It takes place after A Christmas Carol when Ebeneezer Scrooge (played by Thom Sesma) dies in a manner that makes a grown up, no longer so tiny Tim (played by Dan Domingues) suspicious. He calls on the greatest detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes (played by Drew McVety) to investigate the death. Of course this all happens on Christmas Eve and there are visits by the Spirits. If you are anything like me you can’t think of a better combination of characters for an excellent Christmas show. The actors are all top notch and the storyline is something that seems at least to me to scream instant classic. I can’t wait to see how this plays out and what the results of the investigation are by the World’s greatest detective. A Sherlock Carol sounds to me to be anything but elementary and it is sure to bring some well needed Holiday cheer to most of our live event starved lives.
Besides the actors there is an award winning crew behind the show that honestly seems to me indicative of what would normally be a show on Broadway.
The show features scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos (School of Rock, In the Heights), costume design by Tony Award winner Linda Cho (Take Me Out, Anastasia), lighting design by Obie Award-winner Rui Rita (Skeleton Crew, Velocity of Autumn), original music & sound design by Tony Award nominee John Gromada (The Elephant Man, The Trip to Bountiful), and hair & wig design by Emmy Award nominee Charles G. LaPointe (Hamilton, Ain’t Too Proud).
So for an off-Broadway price you are sure to be treated to a show that pulls out all the stops and delivers. You can see Santa and the Rockettes any year, so if you can only choose one show to see this holiday season make it A Sherlock Carol. I am sure you will thank me. This is a limited engagement so do not miss this show. Bring your friends and family. Share the gift of joy this season and support the arts in the process.
